city too hot - track o’ the day

oh man. it was hot today. my first triple digit day here in Austin. i tell ya, the summer is gonna kick my ass. so in honor of today’s heat and that which will undoubtedly come, our track o’ the day will be City Too Hot by Lee “Scratch” Perry. the song deals with the heated political situation in late 70’s Jamaica and is chock full of crazy rhythm and warped production, the sonic equivalent of heatwaves coming off asphalt.
enjoy.

if only all pop music was this good.
happy friday all.
as a bonus i’m also gonna throw in the French version of Waterloo as today’s Track O’ The Day!

weird weeds - track o’ the day

i don’t know much about The Weird Weeds.
other than they are from here in Austin and i missed their instore performance at End Of An Ear a while back because my son made it perfectly clear that he did not want to be there.
tonight i stumbled across their track Dream Songs off their album I Miss This, it was the perfect remedy for the throbbing headache that has had me it it’s grip all day. it’s a short track with pretty vocals and what sounds like a chirpy little bird call throughout the song.
check out their website to buy their albums and find out where they’ll be playing for SXSW. and here’s their myspace too.
dig it…

Jacques Brel & friends

so i’ve been on a Jacques Brel kick lately, especially at night when i’m trying to get to sleep. so the other night i went to good ol’ youtube to see what kinda JB goodies i could find. i found some amazing performances full of sweat and emotion. i thought i’d share my findings with you good people…
first we have an incredible version of Amsterdam, probably his best known tune, which has been covered by Scott Walker and David Bowie among others. check it out:
here’s Mr. Brel doing a sweaty, heartbreaking Ne Me Quitte Pas…
well, as is often the case when browsing youtube, one thing leads to another and soon i had discovered a couple of Scott Walker vids that i had never seen before, apparently from some crazy TV show circa 1972:
there’s one more from this same TV show, youtube won’t let me embed it so go see it HERE. this one is pretty crazy. check out the bizzaro dance/flying routine that occurs when the fuzzed out guitar solo happens around 1:34.
so in honor of Jacques Brel we’re gonna have a triple track o’ the day today. three, count ‘em three versions of the classic Brel track, Amsterdam as preformed by Brel himself live from 1964, Bowie, whose version comes from his BBC session recorded 5/2/70 and was originally broadcast on The Sunday Show, and Scott Walker whose version comes from his first post-Walker Brothers release Scott(1967). enjoy!

let it be
today’s track o’ the day comes from soul legends Gladys Knight & The Pips. it’s their version of The Beatles’ Let It Be.
a perfect track for a quiet sunday. it starts low and mournful before it builds and swells to a big gospel-like finish.
this track is from somewhere around 1971,
well before Gladys converted to Mormonism and started recording songs written by Senator Orrin Hatch.
seriously.

Franklin For Short - track o’ the day
today’s Track O’ The Day comes from a Ventura, California band called Franklin For Short. i’ve seen ‘em live a few times and it seems like they just keep getting better and better with time. i got the chance to catch a couple shows right before my move to Austin, and they were fantastic. these boys can write and play a catchy tune. they’ve got a new album coming out soon on Beehouse Records entitled Swell, which i have a feeling will be very good. here’s footage of Franklin For Short on Songs From A Window, the name of the song is Red Tide (i think!) and it’s one of my favorites from the band and it’s today’s Track O’ The Day. enjoy!
